About this site

We are a small, independent editorial site about markdowns on outdoor gear, footwear and workwear at off-price retailers, Sierra first among them. We browse the markdown sections the way we always have, as shoppers, and put the things we would buy ourselves on a short list with the price we saw.

What we do

• We browse and we pick. A few of us go through the markdown pages, open the things that catch our eye, and keep the ones that clear a real bar. Every price on this site was seen by a person.
• We say why. The brands we would buy ourselves come first, then a real discount against what the item usually sells for, then whether we would actually wear or use it. Our how we choose page spells it out.
• We write guides. How closeout pricing works, how to size up a size run, when categories turn over, and what to look for in the categories we buy most: boots, trail footwear, insulation, bottles and packs. The guides are evergreen; the picks change every week.
• We do not sell anything. Every product link takes you to the store. Orders, shipping and returns are between you and the retailer.

What we are not

We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or owned by any retailer or brand we mention. Product photos are the makers' and the store's own; we copy none of the store's editorial content. The names of stores and brands are their owners' trademarks, and we use them only to say where a product is sold and who made it.

We do not claim to beat every price on the internet. We shop a few stores closely and tell you what caught our eye this week, with the context to judge whether the price is good.

How we make money

Product links on this site are affiliate links. If you click one and buy something, we may receive a commission from the store, through an affiliate network. The price you pay is the same either way. Commissions do not change what we pick or where it sits; we feature what we would buy, and nothing is placed for pay. Our affiliate disclosure has the full statement.

Who we are

A small team that has bought outdoor gear, footwear and workwear from off-price retailers for well over a decade and still checks the markdown pages most mornings with a coffee. This site is the shortlist we would send a friend. We write under the site's name rather than our own.
