How we choose what to feature

A short list beats a long one. Here is the bar an item has to clear before it goes on this site, and what does not count.
Most deal pages are long because length looks like effort. Ours are short on purpose. Everything on this site was picked by a person who would buy it, and this page is the bar we hold ourselves to.
Brands we trust
We start with makers whose products we have worn, carried or used ourselves and whose prices hold up elsewhere: Carhartt, Keen, Merrell, Osprey, Hydro Flask, New Balance, Altra, Brooks and the rest of the names on our brand pages. A Keen at 35 percent off sits above a house-brand item at 60 percent off, on purpose. A deep discount on something nobody would pay full price for is not a deal.
A real discount
Every off-price listing shows a compare-at price and a percentage. We treat the percentage as a place to start looking, not as a verdict. Before something goes on the list we ask what the item usually sells for: what last season's version goes for elsewhere, what the brand's own clearance was charging. If the sale price is close to that, it is a fair price, not a markdown, whatever the badge says. We also prefer the price band where most genuinely useful buys live, roughly $10 to $200; things outside it have to be very good to make the cut.
Sizes still there when we looked
A deep cut on a style with one odd size left is not something we want to send you to. Before something goes on the list we open the product page and check that a reasonable spread of sizes was still available when we looked. Things sell, so by the time you click some may be gone; the store's page is the final word, and our size run guide explains what to make of what you find there.
Things we would wear or use
The last filter is the plainest. If none of us would put it in our own cart, it does not go on the page. That rules out the novelty colours, the odd sizes, the discontinued model that was discontinued for a reason, and the categories we do not know well enough to judge.
What is not a factor
Commission is not a factor. We are paid the same way on everything at the stores we shop, and we do not accept payment for placement. Nothing on this site is sponsored beyond the affiliate relationship described on the disclosure page.
Popularity is not a factor either. We do not know what you click, so we could not favour it if we wanted to.
What is on each card
The brand, the product name, the price, the compare-at price and the saving. A "New this week" pill marks the things that are new to our list. That is the whole card; if you want more, the product page is one click away, and it is the page that counts.
Why we keep it this way
Off-price shopping rewards patience and punishes impulse. A short, honestly chosen list is easier to check every week than a long one, and easier to trust. If we ever feature something that turns out to be a poor buy, we would rather hear about it and take it down than leave it up.
